Yep, that’s the Matterhorn. And that’s about as close as we got. The mountain is closed to climbers due to dangerous conditions.
No Weiner Dogs?
Apparently, all other types of dogs were allowed in this Swiss mountaintop restaurant.
The World's Longest Bench
No - seriously, this is the world’s longest bench. Who knew? Who cares? Anyways, it’s in Geneva.
The Geneva Water Jet
This massive 400’ water jet on the Geneva waterfront is the most distinctive feature of the city. Of course, the Saudis decided to build an even bigger one adjacent to their seaside city of Jeddah, shooting salt water 1,000’ in the air.
The Monte Rosa Massif
The following panoramic shot is of the Monte Rosa massif, taken from the Zermatt side. You can either take the train up to the top for this photo (quite easy), hike it all the way from Zermatt (blech), or do a combination (our option, stopping at a lower train station and hiking the rest of the way). Quite civilized.
A Hot Day at Kandersteg
This panoramic shot comes from an overlook at Kandersteg, Switzerland on a very hot day. Gorgeous view.
Dreaming of Grindelwald
This panoramic shot was taken from a hillside in Grindelwald, Switzerland, near sunset. That is the Wetterhorn on the left, extending to the north face of the Eiger on the right.
Cannabis dumping ground
Canada allows cannabis, but you cannot take it over the border into the US. So, they have provided these convenient dumping stations. I wonder who gets to empty it…
Time in the Shop
Like all sports cars, Formula One cars spend most of their time in the shop. No exception here, as the Aston Martin car is being watched over by a mechanic.
Red Bull Makes Too Much Money
If you’ve ever watched a Formula 1 race, this is where team principal Christian Horner sits. Notice the imprinted Red Bull logo. They have so much money, they don’t even need to spend it on their cars.
Hot Times in Formula 1 Grand Prix
Here is a shot of one of the Mercedes cars at the Montreal Grand Prix. We were in the stands next to the starting grid, and got to see blurs going by at 200 mph. It was actually easier to watch the race on the Jumbotron across the track from us.
The Longest Run in Colorado
Here we are halfway down Long Shot (at Snowmass), which is the longest ski run in Colorado, at more than three miles. They limit access by requiring a 10-minute hike to the top of the run. This might sound exciting, but it was actually a lot of skittering over hard-packed snow.
It's Cat Skiing Time Again
We are in a bit of a drought here in Colorado, but not a bad one yet. Here I am backcountry skiing north of Steamboat earlier today.
In the Christmas Spirit...
The Christmas lighting at the Broadmoor Hotel is quite magnificent, as you can see from the following photo.
Gingerbread House at the Broadmoor Hotel
The Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs puts out some kind of incredible confectionary landmark every Christmas. Here is the latest, along with an ingredients list.
Skogafoss on a Perfect Day
We drove down to the Skogafoss waterfall in southern Iceland during a perfect day, and caught this great rainbow next to it.
The Volcano Took the Day Off
We climbed up to a spot from which you can see the Geldingadalir volcano in Iceland - except that it was taking the day off. No lava bombs, no fleeing villagers. Sigh. Also posted below are photos of the masses of people hiking up to the same spot, the warning siren that goes off when there is a gas alert, and a close-up of the lava in the valley.
Volcano Messages
We hiked up to an overlook from which you can see the Geldingadalir volcano in Iceland, to find the following mass of stickers on the side of the transmitter station that the government had installed there.
Some Extremely Hot Springs
These are the boiling hot springs at Hafnarfjorder, in Iceland. Bathing not recommended. It also helps to pinch your nose - it’s a bit stinky.
A Crappy Day on the Golden Circle
We spent a very wet and cold day on the Golden Circle, east of Reykjavik. The highlight is definitely the Gullfoss waterfall, which is pictured below.
